- Alif-Lãm-Mĩm. The Romans have been defeated in a nearby land. Yet following their defeat, they will triumph within three to nine years. The ˹whole˺ matter rests with Allah before and after ˹victory˺. And on that day the believers will rejoice at the victory willed by Allah. He gives victory to whoever He wills. For He is the Almighty, Most Merciful. ˹This is˺ the promise of Allah. ˹And˺ Allah never fails in His promise. But most people do not know. They ˹only˺ know the worldly affairs of this life, but are ˹totally˺ oblivious to the Hereafter. Have they not reflected upon their own being? Allah only created the
heavens and the earth and everything in between for a purpose and an
appointed term. Yet most people are truly in denial of the meeting with
their Lord! Have they not travelled throughout the land to see what was the end of
those ˹destroyed˺ before them? They were far superior in might; they
cultivated the land and developed it more than these ever
have. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. Allah would have
never wronged them, but it was they who wronged themselves. Then most evil was the end of the evildoers for denying and mocking the signs of Allah.

Divine Control Over History: The events of this world, including the rise and fall of empires, are not random or determined solely by military might. They are under the absolute control of Allah, who orchestrates them according to His wisdom.
The Qur'an as Divine Revelation: The prophecy of the Romans' victory against all odds served as a powerful, verifiable sign for the contemporaries of the Prophet. Its fulfillment was a tangible proof of the Qur'an's divine origin.
The Superficiality of Worldly Knowledge: A preoccupation with material power and geopolitics without an understanding of God and the Hereafter leads to flawed conclusions. True insight comes from combining knowledge of the world with awareness of the divine purpose.
The Inevitable End of Arrogance: The verses connect the immediate situation to a universal historical pattern. Empires and peoples who become arrogant, corrupt, and deny God's signs ultimately face destruction, regardless of their temporary successes. The "victory" that truly matters is the victory of faith and truth.
The opening verses of Surah Ar-Rum teach that worldly power is fleeting and determined solely by Allah, whose unbreakable promise of victory to the seemingly defeated Romans proved that true success lies not in material strength but in faith and awareness of the Hereafter.
