DAY 509: Ali 'Imran 64-80

•  Say, “O People of the Book! Let us come to common terms: that we will worship none but Allah, associate none with Him, nor take one another as lords instead of Allah.” But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we have submitted ˹to Allah alone˺.” O People of the Book! Why do you argue about Abraham, while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until long after him? Do you not understand? Here you are! You disputed about what you have ˹little˺ knowledge of, but why do you now argue about what you have no knowledge of?² Allah knows and you do not know. Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian; he submitted in all uprightness and was not a polytheist. Indeed, those who have the best claim to Abraham are his followers, this Prophet, and the believers. And Allah is the Guardian of those who believe. Some of the People of the Book wish to mislead you ˹believers˺. They mislead none but themselves, yet they fail to perceive it. O  People of the Book! Why do you reject the signs of Allah while you bear witness ˹to their truth˺? O  People of the Book! Why do you mix the truth with falsehood and hide the truth knowingly? A group among the People of the Book said ˹to one another˺, “Believe in what has been revealed to the believers in the morning and reject it in the evening, so they may abandon their faith. But do not believe (for real) except in those who follow your faith.” Say, “(Real) guidance is the guidance of Allah.” (But all that you do is due to your envy) that someone is given what is similar to that which you have been given, or that they argue against you before your Lord.” Say, “The bounty is in the hands of Allah. He gives it to whom He wills. Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing. He chooses whoever He wills to receive His mercy. And Allah is the Lord of infinite bounty. There are some among the People of the Book who, if entrusted with a stack of gold, will readily return it. Yet there are others who, if entrusted with a single coin, will not repay it unless you constantly demand it. This is because they say, “We are not accountable for ˹exploiting˺ the Gentiles.” And ˹so˺ they attribute lies to Allah knowingly. Absolutely! Those who honour their trusts and shun evil—surely Allah loves those who are mindful ˹of Him˺.  Indeed, those who trade Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a fleeting gain will have no share in the Hereafter. Allah will neither speak to them, nor look at them, nor purify them on the Day of Judgment. And they will suffer a painful punishment. There are some among them who distort the Book with their tongues to make you think this ˹distortion˺ is from the Book—but it is not what the Book says. They say, “It is from Allah”—but it is not from Allah. And ˹so˺ they attribute lies to Allah knowingly. It is not appropriate for someone who Allah has blessed with the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to say to people, “Worship me instead of Allah.” Rather, he would say, “Be devoted to the worship of your Lord ˹alone˺—by virtue of what you read in the Scripture and what you teach.” And he would never ask you to take angels and prophets as lords. Would he ask you to disbelieve after you have submitted?

  This section is a masterful pivot. After the detailed narrative about Jesus and the challenge of mubāhala, the Quran now turns directly to the People of the Book with a powerful, reasoned call to common ground, a sharp critique of their theological deviations, and a firm correction of those who claim prophethood for things they never said. It's a call back to pure Abrahamic monotheism.
  Act One (33-44): The Pure Setup
  The story of Maryam's chosenness, her miraculous upbringing, and the birth of John. It's a narrative of divine favor flowing through a blessed family, all pointing toward pure monotheism. No theological disputes yet—just the raw, beautiful story.
  Act Two (45-63): The Jesus Clarification
  Now the narrative lands on Jesus himself. The Quran presents the full truth: virgin birth by God's command, a mighty prophet, miracles by God's permission, a messenger calling only to God's worship. It denies crucifixion, affirms God raised him, and ends with the mubāhala challenge—invoking God's curse on whoever lies about Jesus.
  Verses 64-66: The Call to Common Ground
  Invite the People of the Book to one shared word: worship God alone with no partners and no human lords. If they refuse, simply declare you submit to God and walk away. And stop arguing about Abraham—the Torah and Gospel came long after him, so your claims are built on ignorance, not knowledge.
  Verses 67-68: Abraham's True Identity
  Abraham was neither Jew nor Christian but a pure, upright submitter to God. The people most entitled to claim him are not his bloodline but those who actually follow his path—including this Prophet and his believers.
  Verses 69-74: The Hidden Agenda of Some People of the Book
  A faction wants to mislead you but only harms themselves. They mix truth with lies, hide what they know, and play psychological games—pretend belief then reject it—hoping to shake your faith. They fear God giving prophethood to others, but bounty is entirely in God's hand, not theirs to hoard.
  Verses 75-78: The Two Faces and the Corruptors of Scripture
  Some are so honest you'd trust them with a fortune; others cheat you over a single coin, excusing it with racist theology about "the unlettered." The honest gain God's love. The corrupt face total divine rejection—no glance, no word, no purification. Others twist scripture with their tongues and lie, calling it God's word.
  Verses 79-80: No Prophet Calls to His Own Worship
  No genuine prophet gifted with scripture and wisdom would ever say, "Worship me." He would only say, "Be devoted to God." Commanding worship of angels or prophets is outright disbelief after submission. Case closed.
  
  The Quran tells the pure story of Jesus (45-63), then turns to those who distorted it and says: come back to common ground, Abraham's path, stop twisting scripture, and accept the obvious truth that no prophet ever called people to worship himself (64-80).
