- Indeed, Allah chose Adam, Noah, the family of Abraham, and the family of ’Imrân above all people ˹of their time˺. They are descendants of one another. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. ˹Remember˺ when the wife of ’Imrân said, “My Lord! I dedicate what is in my womb entirely to Your service, so accept it from me. You ˹alone˺ are truly the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” When she delivered, she said, “My Lord! I have given birth to a
girl,”—and Allah fully knew what she had delivered—“and the male is not
like the female. I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan, the accursed.” So her Lord accepted her graciously and blessed her with a pleasant
upbringing—entrusting her to the care of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah
visited her in the sanctuary, he found her supplied with provisions. He
exclaimed, “O Mary! Where did this come from?” She replied, “It is from
Allah. Surely Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit.” Then and there Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, “My Lord! Grant
me—by your grace—righteous offspring. You are certainly the Hearer of
˹all˺ prayers.” So the angels called out to him while he stood praying in the sanctuary,
“Allah gives you good news of ˹the birth of˺ John (Yahya) who will confirm the
Word of Allah and will be a great leader, chaste, and a prophet among
the righteous.” Zachariah exclaimed, “My Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old
and my wife is barren?” He replied, “So will it be. Allah does what He
wills.” Zachariah said, “My Lord! Grant me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is that
you will not ˹be able to˺ speak to people for three days except through
gestures. Remember your Lord often and glorify ˹Him˺ morning and
evening.” And ˹remember˺ when the angels said, “O Mary! Surely Allah has selected
you, purified you, and chosen you over all women of the world. O Mary! Be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself ˹in prayer˺ and bow along with those who bow down.” This is news of the unseen that We reveal to you ˹O Prophet˺. You were
not with them when they cast lots to decide who would be Mary’s
guardian, nor were you there when they argued ˹about it˺.

Seeing Maryam's miraculous provision triggers something in Zechariah. He asks not just for any child, but for dhurriyyatan ṭayyibah—a pure, good offspring. God answers immediately through angels while he's still praying: the good news of John (Yaḥyā). His description is glorious: he will confirm the "Word from Allah" (referring to Jesus), be a master of self-control, chaste, and a righteous prophet. Zechariah, old and with a barren wife, asks for a sign. The sign is a temporary, self-imposed silence—three days of communicating only by gestures, and instead, a deepened internal state of constant remembrance and glorification of God. The prayer for a son becomes an opportunity for a deeper spiritual discipline.
Verses 33-34: The Chosen Lineage
God chose Adam, Noah, Abraham's family, and Imran's family above all creation—a single, interconnected spiritual lineage flowing through one blessed tree, selected with perfect knowledge.
Verses 35-36: The Vow of a Mother
Imran's wife vowed her unborn child to God's service, expected a boy but delivered Maryam, and with profound insight named her and prayed fiercely for her protection from Satan.
Verse 37: The Miraculous Upbringing of Maryam
God beautifully accepted Maryam, placed her under Zechariah's care, and provided her with miraculous provision—prompting her simple confession: "It is from Allah; He provides without account."
Verses 38-41: Zechariah’s Prayer and a Miraculous Son
Inspired by Maryam, Zechariah prayed for a pure son; angels announced John, and his sign was three days of silence devoted to intense remembrance of God.
Verses 42-44: Maryam Elevated and the Casting of Lots
Angels declared Maryam chosen, purified, and elevated above all women, and the Quran confirms its truth by revealing the unseen casting of lots for her guardianship—proof the Prophet wasn't making it up.
God's chosen lineage flows through Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Imran, culminating in the miraculous story of Maryam—vowed to God before birth, divinely provided for, guarded by Zechariah, declared purified above all women, and mother of a miraculous son yet to be announced—all revealed as unseen proof of authentic prophethood.
