- Alif-Lãm-Mĩm. Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. He has revealed to you the Book with the truth, confirming what has been before it, and has sent down the Torah and the Injīl earlier to give guidance to mankind, and has sent down the Furqān (the
Criterion of right and wrong). Surely, those who have rejected the
verses of Allah, for them there is severe punishment. Allah is Mighty,
the Lord of Retribution. Surely, Allah is such that nothing is hidden from Him, neither in the earth nor in the sky. He is the One Who shapes you in the wombs of your mothers as He wills.
There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him—the Almighty, All-Wise. He is the One who has revealed to you the Book (the Qur’ān). Out of it
there are verses that are MuHkamāt (of established meaning), which are
the principal verses of the Book, and some others are Mutashābihāt
(whose definite meanings are unknown). Now those who have perversity in
their hearts go after such part of it as is mutashābih, seeking (to
create) discord, and searching for its interpretation (that meets their
desires), while no one knows its interpretation except Allah; and those
well-grounded in knowledge say: “We believe therein; all is from our
Lord.” Only the men of understanding observe the advice. “Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate from the right path after You
have given us guidance, and bestow upon us mercy from Your own. Surely,
You, and You alone, are the One who bestows in abundance. Our Lord! You will certainly gather all humanity for the ˹promised˺
Day—about which there is no doubt. Surely Allah does not break His
promise.”

The Quran is not a new, standalone message but a confirmation (muṣaddiqan) of a continuous chain of revelation—the Torah and the Gospel. This creates a unified history of prophecy.
The revelation culminates with Al-Furqan (The Criterion). This is the God-given ability to distinguish truth from falsehood, right from wrong. The Quran is called both "the Book" and "the Criterion," showing it contains both beautiful guidance and the sharp standard by which to judge.
The shift to a stern warning here is strategic. It immediately clarifies that this knowledge isn’t just abstract philosophy; it carries the ultimate weight of accountability. Rejecting it after it’s made clear isn’t a harmless mistake but a dangerous denial, met by God’s might and justice.
Verses 1-2: The Unshakeable Foundation
A divine mystery opens the scene, then the core hits: no god but the Ever-Living, Self-Sustaining One. He needs nothing; everything depends on Him. That's your only anchor.
Verses 3-4: The Chain of Truth and Its Stakes
The Quran isn't a new religion—it confirms the Torah and Gospel and arrives as the Criterion splitting truth from falsehood. The warning is immediate: rejecting this clarity isn't a small mistake; it's fatal.
Verses 5-6: Intimate Creation, Ultimate Knowledge
Every secret in the universe is exposed to Him, and He personally shaped you in the womb however He willed. Your existence isn't an accident; it's His deliberate, wise design.
Verse 7: The Heart’s Litmus Test with Scripture
Deviant hearts skip the clear verses and weaponize the ambiguous ones to stir chaos. Mature hearts anchor in the clear core and say of the rest, "We believe—all of it is from our Lord." That humble surrender is real wisdom.
Verses 8-9: The Only Sane Response—A Prayer for Steadfastness
Knowing how slippery the heart is, the wise don't flex—they beg: "Lord, don't let our hearts deviate after You've guided us, and drown us in Your mercy." Why? Because Judgment Day is a done deal, and only a firm heart survives it.
The surah opens by grounding you in the Ever-Living God who revealed the Quran as the ultimate truth, personally shaped you in the womb, tests your heart by how you approach His words, and leaves you with only one sane response—begging Him to keep your heart firm until the Day you meet Him.
