DAY 478: Baqarah 168-176

  •  O humanity! Eat from what is lawful and good on the earth and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. He is truly your sworn enemy. He orders you only to (do) evil and immodest acts,  and to claim against Allah what you do not know. When it is said to them, “Follow what Allah has revealed,” they reply, “No! We ˹only˺ follow what we found our forefathers practicing.” ˹Would they still do so,˺ even if their forefathers had ˹absolutely˺ no understanding or guidance? The example of the disbelievers ˹not responding to the Messenger’s warning˺ is like a flock not comprehending the calls and cries of the shepherd. ˹They are wilfully˺ deaf, dumb and blind so they have no understanding. O believers! Eat from the good things We have provided for you. And give thanks to Allah if you ˹truly˺ worship Him ˹alone˺. He has only forbidden you ˹to eat˺ carrion, blood, swine, and what is slaughtered in the name of any other than Allah. But if someone is compelled by necessity—neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediate need—they will not be sinful. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Indeed, those who hide Allah’s revelations, trading them for a fleeting gain consume nothing but fire into their bellies. Allah will neither speak to them on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them. And they will suffer a painful punishment. They are the ones who trade guidance for misguidance and forgiveness for punishment. How persistent are they in pursuit of the Fire! That is because Allah has revealed the Book in truth. And surely those who differ regarding it are totally engrossed in opposition.
    (
After the sobering scene of Judgment Day (165–167), where leaders disown followers and all ties are cut, Allah now addresses humanity directly: Eat from what is good and lawful on earth. Do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Then He gives a specific command about sacrifices and sin, followed by one of the most detailed warnings against concealing truth — especially for those who know the scripture and hide it for worldly gain.
153–164    Patience, prayer, tests, Safa & Marwa, signs in creation
Live with patience, prayer, honesty, and open eyes to the signs around you.
165–167    The regret of misplaced love — leaders disown followers on Judgment Day
Do not love anything as if it were God — because on the Day it matters most, it will drop you and not look back.
168–176    Lawful food, Satan's footsteps, concealing truth, the worst trade
Do not take small steps toward evil, do not hide behind ancestors, do not sell truth for cheap — because the silence of God is the worst punishment.

153–164    Don't ignore the signs. Patience, prayer, honesty, and reflection are your tools.
165–167    Don't love the wrong thing. Your false loves will abandon you.
168–176    Don't trade truth for cheap. Concealing truth and taking small steps toward evil will lead to silence from God.

168    Eat lawful, good food — don't follow Satan's footsteps    Small steps lead far astray.
169    Satan commands evil, immorality, and speaking about God without knowledge    Claiming God's approval for wrong is the worst deception.
170    "We follow our fathers" — even if they were ignorant    Blind tradition is not an argument.
171    Disbelievers are like animals hearing only noise — deaf, dumb, blind    You can shout truth to a sealed heart and only hear noise back.
172–173    Lawful and forbidden foods — with mercy for necessity    Rules are clear. Mercy is for real need, not convenience.
174    Those who conceal truth and sell it for cheap — fire in bellies, Allah won't speak to them    Hiding truth is a grave crime. Silence from God is the worst punishment.
175    They traded guidance for error, forgiveness for punishment — how patient they are!    The worst trade in history.
176    The Book is truth — those who differ over it are in extreme dissension    Don't blame the Book. Blame the people who fight over it.

Eat what is good and lawful, do not follow Satan's footsteps step by step, do not hide behind "my fathers did it," do not conceal truth for a cheap price — because those who trade guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment will find that Allah's silence is the worst punishment of all.
