- When his Lord ordered him, “Submit ˹to My Will˺,” he responded, “I submit to the Lord of all worlds.” This was the advice of Abraham—as well as Jacob—to his children,
˹saying˺, “Indeed, Allah has chosen for you this faith; so do not die
except in ˹a state of full˺ submission.” Or did you witness when death came to Jacob? He asked his children, “Who
will you worship after my passing?” They replied, “We will ˹continue
to˺ worship your God, the God of your forefathers—Abraham, Ishmael, and
Isaac—the One God. And to Him we ˹all˺ submit.” Those are a people who have passed away. For them is what they earned,
and for you is what you earned. Nor shall you be questioned as to what
they have been doing. The Jews and Christians each say, “Follow our faith to be ˹rightly˺
guided.” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “No! We follow the faith of Abraham, the
upright—who was not a polytheist.” Say, ˹O believers,˺ “We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to
us; and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his
descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from
their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. And to Allah we
all submit.” So if they believe in what you believe, then they will indeed be
˹rightly˺ guided. But if they turn away, they are simply opposed ˹to the
truth˺. But Allah will spare you their evil. For He is the All-Hearing,
All-Knowing. This is the ˹natural˺ Way of Allah. And who is better than Allah in ordaining a way? And we worship ˹none but˺ Him. Say, “Would you dispute with us about Allah, while He is our Lord and
your Lord? We are accountable for our deeds and you for yours. And we
are devoted to Him ˹alone˺. Do you claim that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants
were all Jews or Christians?” Say, “Who is more knowledgeable: you or
Allah?” Who does more wrong than those who hide the testimony they
received from Allah? And Allah is never unaware of what you do. Those are a people who have passed away. For them is what they earned,
and for you is what you earned, and you shall not be questioned about
what they have been doing.

After establishing Abraham as the positive example (124–130), these verses now show us his actual submission, his final commands to his sons, and then the Quran addresses a false claim: some said that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes were "Jews" or "Christians." The Quran responds: No. That came later. They were hanifs (pure monotheists) who submitted to God alone.
Then comes one of the most quoted verses in the Quran: "That is a nation that has passed. For them what they earned, and for you what you earn. You will not be asked about what they used to do." — A powerful reminder to stop arguing about the dead and focus on your own deeds.
The Flow — Why Abraham Now Makes Complete Sense
40–103 Children of Israel: negative example (covenants broken, arrogance, selective belief)
124–130 Abraham: positive example (tested and passed, built Kaaba, prayed for guidance)
131–141 Abraham's actual submission + end of empty arguments (stop claiming him for your team, focus on your own deeds)
131 "Submit" — "I have submitted" Submission is a simple "yes" to truth.
132 Abraham instructs his sons: die as submitters The best inheritance is a way of living.
133 Jacob's deathbed: "What will you worship?" His sons: "One God. To Him we submit." The best question a parent can ask.
134 That nation has passed. Their deeds are theirs. Yours are yours. Stop arguing about the dead. Focus on yourself.
135 "Be Jews or Christians" — "No, the religion of Abraham the hanif" Labels are not the path. Pure submission is.
136 Believe in all prophets, make no distinction Inclusive monotheism. No picking and choosing.
137 If they believe the same — guided. If not — dissension. Allah suffices. Don't waste life fighting. Allah is enough.
138 Baptism of Allah — better than any ritual The essence is not the ceremony — it's the turning.
139 Why argue? He is your Lord and our Lord. Your deeds, our deeds. Pointless arguments about God are a waste.
140 Were Abraham, etc., Jews or Christians? Do you know more than Allah? Don't project your labels onto the past.
141 Repeat: That nation has passed. Theirs theirs. Yours yours. Stop. Focus. Move on.
Abraham said "I submit" without hesitation, instructed his sons to die as submitters, and his legacy is not a label (Jew or Christian) but a way — and the Quran tells you to stop arguing about the dead, project your labels onto the past, because their deeds are theirs and yours are yours.
