DAY 468: Baqarah 83-86

•  And ˹remember˺ when We took a covenant from the children of Israel ˹stating˺, “Worship none but Allah; be kind to parents, relatives, orphans and the needy; speak kindly to people; establish prayer; and pay alms-tax.” But you ˹Israelites˺ turned away—except for a few of you—and were indifferent. And ˹remember˺ when We took your covenant that you would neither shed each other’s blood nor expel each other from their homes, you gave your pledge and bore witness. But here you are, killing each other and expelling some of your people from their homes, aiding one another in sin and aggression; and when those ˹expelled˺ come to you as captives, you still ransom them—though expelling them was unlawful for you. Do you believe in some of the Scripture and reject the rest? Is there any reward for those who do so among you other than disgrace in this worldly life and being subjected to the harshest punishment on the Day of Judgment? For Allah is never unaware of what you do. These are the ones who trade the Hereafter for the life of this world. So their punishment will not be reduced, nor will they be helped.

  After the hard truth about hardened hearts (74–82), Allah now reminds the Children of Israel of the actual covenant He took from them. Not a vague "be good" — but specific, actionable commands. And then He contrasts that covenant with their actual behavior.
  • Worship only Allah    No shirk. The foundation.
  • Good to parents    Gratitude to those who gave you life.
  • Good to relatives, orphans, needy    Social responsibility — family first, then the vulnerable.
  • Speak good to people    Words matter. No harshness, no mockery, no slander.
  • Establish prayer    Connection to God — ritual or life-orientation (as we discussed).
  • Give zakah    Purify wealth — enable community flourishing.
  
  This is about everyone who makes promises to God or to their own conscience — and then walks away. The covenant is beautiful. The commands are clear. The failure is human. And the phrase "except a few" appears again and again in Quranic history: the righteous are always a minority.
  • Do not shed your blood    No murder within the community.
  • Do not evict each other from homes    No oppression, no displacement, no ethnic cleansing.
  This is selective morality. You keep the rules that make you look good (ransoming captives, charity) and break the rules that cost you (not fighting, not evicting). That's not faith — that's pick-and-choose religion.
  
  They made a covenant: worship God, be good to parents and the needy, speak well, don't kill, don't evict — then they broke it all while still pretending to follow the pretty parts, and the Quran says that's not faith, that's a trade of the Hereafter for a world that won't save them.
