- And We have appointed heirs to what has been left by parents and next of
kin. As for those you have made a pledge to, give them their share.1 Surely Allah is a Witness over all things. Men are the protectors and maintainers of women...
Righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in the husband's absence
what Allah would have them guard. But those from whom you fear
arrogance—advise them, leave them in bed, and make your point firmly. If
they obey you, then seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever
Exalted and Grand If you anticipate a split between them, appoint a mediator from his
family and another from hers. If they desire reconciliation, Allah will
restore harmony between them. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

1–6 Protection of the vulnerable (orphans, women, wealth) Sets the rules
7–14 Inheritance justice and fair distribution Sets the math
15–25 Sexual boundaries, marriage laws, and dignity Sets the boundaries
26–32 The why behind it all—mercy, repentance, and avoiding major sins Sets the spiritual engine.
This block is the transition point—it ties up the inheritance and rights discussion while introducing marital conflict resolution. If verses 1–32 were about setting up the rules for society, wealth, and marriage, verses 33–35 are about what to do when things go wrong, especially between husbands and wives.
Verses 1–32 gave you the rules for society, wealth, and marriage. Verses 33–35 show you how to handle conflict within that system—with fairness, accountability, and a clear path back to peace. The goal is never punishment; it's always reconciliation. And the Prophet's life, the Quran's linguistics, and the consistent ethic of mercy confirm that physical harm has no place in any interpretation of these verses.
33 Everyone has designated heirs; honor your covenants too God sees every transaction—no one gets cheated
34 Men are maintainers of women (due to strength and spending); discipline follows a 3-step escalation (advise, separate beds, make point firmly or separate); if she corrects, stop Authority comes with responsibility, not privilege; physical harm is completely rejected by the Prophet's example and Quranic linguistics
35 If conflict persists, bring one arbitrator from each family; if both want reconciliation, God will make it happen No one is above accountability; family intervention exists to protect fairness
A just marriage is built on mutual responsibility, graduated conflict resolution without physical harm, and family mediation if needed—because God's law protects dignity and seeks reconciliation, never violence.
