DAY 148: A'raf 163-166

•  Ask them about ˹the people of˺ the town which was by the sea, who broke the Sabbath.¹ During the Sabbath, ˹abundant˺ fish would come to them clearly visible, but on other days the fish were never seen. In this way We tested them for their rebelliousness. When some of ˹the righteous among˺ them questioned ˹their fellow Sabbath-keepers˺, “Why do you ˹bother to˺ warn those ˹Sabbath-breakers˺ who will either be destroyed or severely punished by Allah?” They replied, “Just to be free from your Lord’s blame, and so perhaps they may abstain.” When they ignored the warning they were given, We rescued those who used to warn against evil and overtook the wrongdoers with a dreadful punishment for their rebelliousness. But when they stubbornly persisted in violation, We said to them, “Be disgraced like apes!”.

  The Sabbath Test and the Fishing Ban:
          A Jewish community living by the sea was commanded to observe the Sabbath (no work, including fishing).     As a test, Allah made fish abundant and visible only on Sabbath days (tempting them to break the law).    Some devised a loophole: They laid nets on Friday to catch fish on Sunday, claiming they "technically" didn’t work on the Sabbath.    Others openly fished on the Sabbath, defying Allah’s command.    A group warned the sinners, asking, "Why preach to people doomed to punishment?" They replied: "To fulfill our duty to Allah and hope they repent."
          Allah tests people with temptations; legal loopholes don’t justify disobedience.   The righteous must speak truth, even if it seems futile.
  Divine Punishment and Transformation:
      Consequences for Disobedience:    Those who ignored warnings were punished severely.     The most defiant were transformed into apes (metaphorically).  Symbolism: Apes represent loss of humanity—acting on base desires without reason or dignity.
  In Arabic and Eastern cultures, the phrase "be like apes" (كالقردة) carries a deep symbolic meaning—it refers to people who lose self-control, act on base instincts, and abandon reason and dignity in pursuit of their desires.
          Those who forbade evil were spared, showing Allah’s justice.
          Deliberate, persistent sin degrades people spiritually and morally.  Divine punishment serves as a warning to future generations.
  When the Israelites arrogantly violated the Sabbath despite clear warnings, Allah punished the defiant by degrading them (like apes), while saving those who stood for truth—proving that deliberate disobedience strips away humanity’s spiritual dignity.
