DAY 44: Leyl 1-7

  • By the night when it covers, and the day when it shines! And by ˹the One˺ Who created male and female! Surely the ends you strive for are diverse. As for the one who is charitable, mindful ˹of Allah˺, and ˹firmly˺ believes in the finest reward, We shall smooth his way towards ease.
    (
     A powerful imagery and oaths to draw attention to the duality of creation—night and day, male and female—and the diversity of human efforts. They introduce the themes of righteousness and sin, generosity and selfishness, and the ultimate consequences of one's actions. The righteous, who give in charity, fear Allah, and believe in His reward, are promised ease and success in this life and the Hereafter.

    The root ح-س-ن (ḥ-s-n) in Arabic carries a much deeper and more nuanced meaning than simply "beauty" or "goodness." It encompasses the idea of perfection, appropriateness, and excellence in every aspect—doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right amount, and in the right manner. This concept is holistic and goes beyond superficial beauty or goodness.

    بِالْحُسْنَى

    the Root ح-س-ن (ḥ-s-n):

  • Core Meaning:

    • The root ح-س-ن fundamentally conveys the idea of perfection, appropriateness, and balance. It refers to something that is excellent in every way, not just aesthetically pleasing or morally good.

    • It implies harmony, precision, and suitability—doing or being something in a way that is perfectly aligned with its purpose and context.

  • Examples of Usage in Arabic:

    • حَسَنٌ (ḥasan): This adjective means "good," "excellent," or "beautiful," but it also implies something that is well-suited, appropriate, and balanced. For example:

      • A حَسَنٌ action is one that is morally good, timely, and proportionate.

      • A حَسَنٌ object is not just beautiful but also functional and well-made.

    • إِحْسَان (iḥsān): This noun means "excellence" or "perfection in action." It is often translated as "doing what is beautiful" or "doing what is best," but it specifically refers to acting with precision, care, and appropriateness. For example:

      • In a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) defined إِحْسَان as "to worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He surely sees you." This reflects the idea of perfecting one's actions in both intention and execution.

    • تَحْسِين (taḥsīn): This refers to "improvement" or "making something better," but it also implies refining something to make it more appropriate, balanced, and excellent.
