DAY 319: Saba 15-21

•  There was indeed a sign for (the community of) Saba’ in their home-land: two gardens, (one) on the right and (one) on the left. “Eat of the provision from your Lord, and be grateful to Him - (You have) an excellent city, and a Most-Forgiving Lord.” Then they turned away. So We sent to them the flood of the dam, and replaced their two gardens with two gardens having fruits of bitter taste, and tamarisk and some bushes of wild lotes. Thus We punished them because of their ungratefulness. We do not give (such a) punishment but to the ungrateful. We had also placed between them and the cities¹ We showered with blessings ˹many small˺ towns within sight of one another. And We set moderate travel distances in between, ˹saying,˺ “Travel between them by day and night safely.” But they said, “Our Lord! Make ˹the distances of˺ our journeys longer,” wronging themselves. So We reduced them to ˹cautionary˺ tales, and scattered them utterly. Surely in this are lessons for whoever is steadfast, grateful.  Indeed, Iblîs’ assumption about them has come true, so they ˹all˺ follow him, except a group of ˹true˺ believers.
  
  He does not have any authority over them, but ˹Our Will is˺ only to distinguish those who believe in the Hereafter from those who are in doubt about it. And your Lord is a ˹vigilant˺ Keeper over all things.

      The Dynamics of Gratitude and Ingratitude: This is the core theme. Blessings are a test, and gratitude is the required response. Ingratitude leads directly to the loss of those blessings.
      Fitting Punishment: The punishment (the dam collapse) was a direct reversal of the specific blessings they enjoyed (fertile land), establishing a clear cause-and-effect relationship.
      Arrogance as a Form of Disbelief: Their sin was not just a lack of thanks, but active arrogance—believing their success was self-made and even challenging God's plan.
      Society vs. the Individual: While the society as a whole was punished, a believing remnant was saved, emphasizing individual moral responsibility.
      The Role of Satanic Temptation: The story clarifies that Satan tempts, but humans choose. His success in leading people astray serves God's larger purpose of distinguishing true believers from disbelievers. 
      
      The people of Saba' were given immense prosperity and security, but their ingratitude and arrogance led to their utter ruin, serving as an eternal lesson that God's blessings are a test and their loss is the direct consequence of disbelief.
